Advanced Installer now Supports Visio VSTO Add-Ins

Advanced Installer now supports creating VSTO Visio Add-Ins installation projects using the Office Add-Ins wizard! This is great news for those of us who are still having to create VSTO Add-Ins, especially since Visual Studio does not include Setup & Deployment projects (again).

Getting the Microsoft Office Theme Value

I am working on a Visio VSTO project where I need to synchronise a UI element with the current session Microsoft Office Theme. At first, I thought that there would be some way of getting a value from the Visio object model, but I was wrong…

The Office Theme can be selected from either the Visio Options, or the Account Options panels.

Assigning Visio Shapes to Layers from Excel Table

I work a lot with layers in Visio, and written an add-in, LayerManager, to assist, but I was asked an interesting question recently: How can shapes by assigned to layers automatically from a list in Excel? So, I thought I would present my solution. This particular request was for a Timeline diagram, where the Milestone shapes are to be on specific layers. So, I just used one of the samples provided with Visio.

  • Sample Timeline has no layers
  • Milestones are group shapes

Viewing Visio Files in Public Websites

Some of my colleagues have asked me how I have managed to include Visio files into this public website, so I thought I would share my secret. Microsoft has kindly provided a File Viewer Web Part for use in SharePoint that appears to be useful in other websites too.

If you view a Visio file that is stored on OneDrive or in SharePoint Online, you can get the </> Embed code for the Visio document from the Show More Commands (…) button in the top right corner. This is normally intended for use within SharePoint pages.

Microsoft have just announced the availability of the new Visio JavaScript Api ( see Visio JavaScript APIs Preview). Using JavaScript to Find and Highlight Visio Shapes by Shape Data values in SharePoint Content Editor

In August, I wrote about Using JavaScript to Display Visio Shape Data and Hyperlinks in SharePoint Content Editor ( see http://blog.bvisual.net/2014/08/16/using-javascript-to-display-visio-shape-data-and-hyperlinks-in-sharepoint-content-editor/ ), so now I have added the ability to select shapes by a property value. The main advantage of using JavaScript in the client is that there is no need to go back to…

Using JavaScript to Display Visio Shape Data and Hyperlinks in SharePoint Content Editor

I like embedding Visio diagrams into SharePoint web pages, but I am not too enamoured with the Shape Info panel and the popup hyperlinks menu because they clutter the diagram surface. So, I thought I would take some time to make an html document that can be included in a Content Editor web part. This…

Countries of the World in Power BI with Flags

I like Power BI, and the latest update features the ability to set a custom web url onto another column. So, I couldn’t resist trying it in the example below. Notice that the Country or Area values are hyperlinks to the url of the country page in the CIA World Factbook.

[UPDATE Oct 2021: The CIA World Factbook has been updated, and this the flag links are currently broken]
