Getting the Microsoft Office Theme Value

I am working on a Visio VSTO project where I need to synchronise a UI element with the current session Microsoft Office Theme. At first, I thought that there would be some way of getting a value from the Visio object model, but I was wrong…

The Office Theme can be selected from either the Visio Options, or the Account Options panels.

Changing Visio Shape Size and Angle with Linked Data

I was recently laying out a computer room floor plan to scale in Visio, from survey data of the cabinets\racks within it, and it occurred to me that I could work a bit smarter than I first thought. Originally, I was going to just add lots of rectangles, size them, rotate them, and label each them with their name. Then I thought, why not use the Width, Depth and Name columns from the survey data to do most of the work for me? It was so simple to do, and only took a few minutes, so I thought I would share my methodology because it demonstrates how easy it is to work smarter with Visio….

These are the simple steps shown above, written out for your education….

Cyber Monday giveaway free Visio Chess

Earlier today, I gave away checkers for Visio (see Cyber Monday free #Visio Checkers! ) , and now this article completes my Cyber Monday freebies with a downloadable chess set for Visio!

This version of the chess/checker board requires connection points (Type = 2 – Inward/Outward) on each of the 64 squares, an, as before, I have styled the pieces with Bevel and Shadow. However, this time I have used my own tool for converting the XAML from Syncfusion’s Metro Studio library into true Visio shapes. This library is great ( see Metro Studio ) but it does not create true Visio shapes. In addition, I have enabled many different configuration options within Visio, such as background shape choice.

Protecting Shapes from Themes in Visio 2013+

There is a vast community of Visio users out there, and some clever people produce stencils for others to use. These are a tremendous resource for other Visio users, especially if they are free. One such stencil is the Skype for Business 2015 stencil that is available from TechNet ( https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/office/Skype-for-Business-2015-4a8f03dc ). It is amazing that PaulB_NZ has produced such a comprehensive stencil. I could not help noticing a comment about using them with themes in Visio 2013+. Basically, they end up as a blob of solid colour, so I thought I would help out with a tip about protecting shapes from themes, and another about sub-shape selection.
