My SQL and SharePoint Saturday additional content

I am presenting my view of using Visio to Visualize data with SQL Server and SharePoint today. The slideshow is available for viewing at https://doc.co/Q43c2m but, whilst I wait for my turn to talk, I have created a smart prism shape to demonstrate many of the smartness of shapes and the data linking features of Visio. The file can be downloaded from http://1drv.ms/1FDAZgI .

Visualising SharePoint and SQL Data with Visio Professional

I will be venturing to the dark side of the moon on Saturday 12th September 2015 at SQL Saturday in Cambridge, UK ( see http://www.sqlsaturday.com/411/EventHome.aspx ).

SQL Saturday Business Intelligence Special in Edinburgh

We had a fantastic weekend in Edinburgh where I presented Visio as a BI solution for SQL professionals at SQL Saturday. I volunteered because, quite frankly, I do not think that Microsoft promote Visio for BI enough, even though they have put in the BI domain for Microsoft partner competencies. This was a community event, so many thanks to all of the sponsors for enabling it, the many volunteers for running around, and especially to Jen Stirrup for organising it ( see http://jenstirrup.com/2015/06/15/jens-pass-diary-sqlsaturday-edinburgh-my-heartfelt-thanks-go-to/ ).

Adam Velo, a fellow MVP, took this photo of me, and he followed up with an excellent presentation about the psychology of data graphics (see http://blog.crmguru.co.uk/ ).

Making unused data-linked SharePoint columns in Visio invisible automatically

I described how and why I sometimes link a SharePoint document library to Visio documents in a previous article ( see http://blog.bvisual.net/2015/02/10/displaying-sharepoint-document-library-column-values-on-visio-services-diagrams/). I mentioned that I always switch off the visibility of some columns because they are rarely needed in my Visio shapes as shape data rows. In this article, I present a VBA macro that can switch them off for you, therefore ensuring consistency.

The Link Data to Shapes feature in Visio does not allow for filtering of columns or rows when SharePoint lists are used as a data source. One answer is to create a view of the list in SharePoint to restrict the rows and some columns, but other columns still get pulled through to the External Data recordsets in Visio by default:

Using SharePoint Choice Columns with Visio Services

Back in March 2014, I wrote about mapping SharePoint Column Types to Visio Shape Data Types ( see http://blog.bvisual.net/2014/03/03/mapping-sharepoint-list-columns-to-visio-shape-data-types/ ), and I skipped over the remaining SharePoint column types that could not be directly mapped. I described Rich Text previously ( see http://blog.bvisual.net/2014/11/14/using-sharepoint-rich-text-multiple-line-columns-with-visio-services/ ), and in this article I describe some of the possibilities of using the SharePoint Choice column type.

There are three different options for Choice columns in SharePoint 2013, but only the third, Checkboxes, allows for multiple selections.

Using SharePoint Rich Text Multiple Line Columns with Visio Services

Back in March, I wrote about mapping SharePoint Column Types to Visio Shape Data Types ( see http://blog.bvisual.net/2014/03/03/mapping-sharepoint-list-columns-to-visio-shape-data-types/ ), and I skipped over the remaining SharePoint column types that could not be directly mapped. In this article I describe some of the possibilities of using the SharePoint Rich Text option for the multi-line column type.

There are three different options for multiple lines of text columns in SharePoint 2013, so I tried the Enhanced rich text option because it allows for media and tables to be included.
