Visio 2010

2012 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

19,000 people fit into the new Barclays Center to see Jay-Z perform. This blog was viewed about 98,000 times in 2012. If it were a concert at the Barclays Center, it would take about 5 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Clusters and Workstations Linked to Excel using Visio Professional

I was recently asked how to easily link an Excel worksheet that contains names of personnel sitting at workstations in clusters to a Visio floor layout. My own approach would probably have been to create an Access or SQL Server database, but I recognise that not everyone is confident about doing that, so I present a way that it can be done simply with just Excel.

The extra complication requested was the ability to easily control the visibility of specific data, so I have added an example of that into the mix.

Firstly, I mocked up a table in Excel. I decided to have separate Cluster and Workstation columns, and so I combined the two together in a column headed Location with a simple formula. I like doing this because I can then create a Pivot Table or Chart easily to give a count of workstations per cluster. I used the 1970 FA Cup winning Chelsea team for the Name and Department columns.

US Election Special–Vector Visio 2003 – 2010 Icons

Following on from my previous post, http://blog.bvisual.net/2012/11/02/us-election-special-vector-visio-2013-icons/, I have saved the stencil that was generated in Visio 2013 back to Visio 2003 – 2010 format … and, guess what? All of the new Bezier Curves got automatically translated to Nurbs, which means they work! (Except for themes … but they can be coloured)

They can be downloaded from : tp://sdrv.ms/TlzoEB

Perhaps someone would like to make Data Graphic icons from them ? : http://blog.bvisual.net/2012/04/19/make-your-own-visio-data-graphic-icons-sets-automatically/

A Visio Logic Gate with Logic

I was recently asked how I would approach improving the Logic Gate 2 in the Circuits and Logic template, on the Analog and Digital Logic stencil. Well, this had resonance with me because I had often wondered why these shapes were not smarter than they are, so I looked more deeply into the shape construction to see how the Logic Gate 2 shape works, and how it could be improved so that the values of the inputs could be set and the logic applied to provide the correct output value. Eventually, similar improvements can be applied to all of the master shapes so that the connected logic diagram responds to input value changes.

The Existing Shape

The Logic Gate 2 shape has Shape Data rows to provide some configuration. Firstly, you can change the number of inputs from 2 to 5, and the number of outputs from 1 to 3:

Assigning Shape Layers from a List in Visio

A Visio user recently asked if it is possible to assign shapes to layers from a list. In his case, he has an Excel table which he has exported shapes and their text using Visio’s Shape Reports feature, to which he has added a column named Layer, and he wants to assign the shapes to these layers. In this article, I demonstrate how this can be done.

I decided to use my MVP Session Wheel diagram ( see http://blog.bvisual.net/2012/06/29/mvp-sessions-wheel/ ) for this example because it already has some layers assigned.

I created a new Shape Report called Presenter Shapes, where I filtered all shapes on the current page to those where the Presenter Shape Data row exists, and the Presenter actually has a value:

Using Visio Stacked Bar Charts

A Visio user asked recently about data binding a table like the following as a stacked chart. The question was a little imprecise about how, so I shall present a few alternatives.

Rg145123545
Rg212244536
Rg378364571

Firstly, I entered the table in Sheet1 of a new Excel workbook and saved it.
