Visio 2010

Visio Map of the World Update

My earlier post about the world in Visio shapes, see http://blog.bvisual.net/2013/08/16/visio-map-of-the-world/ , has been one of my most popular, and a reader recently asked about changing the colour of countries by data not in my original worksheet, and another asked about adding labelled dots.

Well, at first, I thought it would be quite simple to add more Data Graphics with the Color By Value that I already had, but then I realised that I needed to adjust some of the shapes that I had created from SVG in my previous article.

The problem is that some of the country shapes which were converted from SVG have geometry at the top group level. This means that any Data Graphic items, other than Color By Value, are actually sub-shapes of the group and will be hidden by the country shape itself. That is probably why the Data Graphics task, on the selected Afghanistan shape below, sent the AF label over to the right of it, whereas all the group shapes with all their geometry in sub-shapes, such as the AE (United Arab Emirates) shape, placed the label in its centre.

Visio Date Format Pictures Affect Data Entry via the Calendar Popup

I have been creating roadmaps in Visio lately, and the client is only concerned with the months and years, so I thought it would be sensible to use a Date Format Picture to display only the month and year in the Shape Data window. What I did not expect is that the mere existence of this Date Format Picture would alter the actual date stored in the cell. In this blog, I layout my concerns about the Calendar popup that is provided for Date type Shape Data rows.

In the following example, I have created a shape, coloured pale orange below, and added 25 Date type Shape Data rows. I have not applied any format to Property1, but then I have applied each of the 17 suggested Date Format Patterns provided on a drop-down list in the Define Shape Data dialog. Finally, I added a further 7 patterns manually. I then selected Today as the value for every single Shape Data row:

London 2012 Olympics Logos for Visio

The excitement around the Olympics in London this summer is growing, and there are many companies, organisations and individuals preparing to have associated events. Therefore, I thought it would be useful to have Visio versions of the logos available.

I downloaded the original SVG files from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:All_London_2012_logos.svg, and then opened them in Visio. Once I had them in Visio, I was able to slightly clean them up by combining some of the resultant shapes, then I renamed the shapes to make them easier to explore. I then made a single master shape, with three Shape Data rows to allow the user to select between six different official colour versions, and a custom option to allow you to sub-select shapes to format as you like.
