Visio JavaScript API preview announced

Microsoft have just announced the availability of the new Visio JavaScript Api ( see Visio JavaScript APIs Preview). I presented this last week at the Artic SharePoint Challenge in Oslo where a number of developers took the opportunity to create data-linked Visio diagrams in Visio, and interact with them in SharePoint.

Here is an abbreviated version of my presentation, explaining the process of creating these dashboards from linking Visio shapes to data, to embedding in web pages …

Visio @ASPC Update

My stint at the Artic SharePoint Challenge is nearly over …. I will be leaving the mountains near Oslo for the UK in a couple of hours, but the teams will continue with their SharePoint and CRM coding for another day. Such dedication! Still, I can always go out side to cool down, and contemplate:

In the meantime, I have enjoyed spreading the knowledge of data-linked Visio diagrams in SharePoint Online to a bunch of geeks who know so much more than me about SharePoint!
I hope they now know more about the capabilities of Visio….
Anyhow, here are some Theta360 shots from the hackathon:

I set a challenge to create a data linked Visio diagram in SharePoint for people popping red or blue pills ….

2017-02-03_15-39-12

Each of the pills are an instance of a single Master, and are linked to two recordsets using Excel Services that provide the personnel data (and hyperlinks) and the pill colour they chose. The position and rotation of each pill is from a random ratio in the Excel worksheet. All of these details, position and rotation are automatically refreshed in the Visio diagram if the Excel workbooks are updated.
Next week, I will talk more about the content 🙂

Visio @Artic SharePoint Challenge

I am pleased to announce that I will be presenting Visio and Visio Online at the Artic SharePoint Challenge near Oslo on 2nd/3rd Feb ( see arcticsharepointchallenge.com ). The theme is The Matrix, but I have not yet decided whether to take the red or the blue pill.

Visio Online is a ideal for embedding visual data diagrams in SharePoint. I hope to see some of you in Norway!

Visio is coming to the web and iOS – Dec. 2016

Microsoft blogged the launch of Visio for iPad and Visio Online Preview yesterday ( see blogs.office.com ). This should be welcome news to every Visio user who wants to increase the consumption of their carefully crafted diagrams. These two new ways of viewing Visio documents (for free) have different capabilities, so I have put some slides together that describe the current differences. Coincidently, Microsoft also announced the upcoming Windows 10 on ARM processors ( see Windows Central ), so the ability to create Visio diagrams is going to be possible on mobile devices too!

MSIgnite Sessions to Watch in Visio

Sessions2Watch.gif

Well, MS Ignite is over for another year. I planned to visit loads of sessions, but the reality was that I spent many hours on the Visio booth. Fortunately, many of them were recorded, including ours, but I don’t have time to watch over 700 videos! So, I looked through them all and picked out 50-odd, and used Get & Transform in Excel again to create suitable queries to link to Visio.

The more I use PowerQuery, the more I like it. I was able to extract the unique values in the Personas, Tags, and Products columns which each contained comma separated lists. I data-linked these values to large circles on different pages, and data-linked the Sessions to Watch to hexagonal shapes. I then wrote a little VBA code to link the circles to the hexagons with data-linked connectors. Data Graphics was applied to all shapes, including the connectors, and a legend added. Each of the Session hexagons have an automatically created hyperlink to the On-Demand Video. I used a standard radial page layout so that I had minimal manual movement shapes.
The end result is a visual dashboard by Persona, Tag and Product to open the videos for the sessions I want to watch.

Displaying SharePoint Document Library Column Values on Visio Services Diagrams

It is often useful to be able to link text or graphics to the values in the SharePoint document library that a Visio diagram is stored in. A SharePoint Document library is just a list with columns and Visio 2013 documents can be linked to the data in SharePoint lists … and it will be automatically refreshable. This means that Approval Status changes, for example, can be displayed as text or icons. This article goes through the methodology of linking data from the SharePoint document library to the Visio document.
