We Visio MVP’s were honoured to be invited to Hyderabad last week to visit the Microsoft Visio product engineering team, as an alternative to the Global MVP Summit in Bellevue/Redmond.
This gave us a great opportunity to show off what we have been up to, and to hear about the the future plans…. exciting, but I can’t say anything yet…
My fellow MVP for Visio, and author, and friend, Scott Helmers, has recently presented a series of videos entitled “Becoming a Visio 2013 Power User”. Scott is a natural presenter, and he does a great job in getting the fundamentals across.

I have been a dedicated user and developer of Visio since 1996 when I got a week-long developer training course presented by Dave Edson (see http://vizfirst.sharepoint.com/Pages/MrDavidAEdsonCEO.aspx ) and Mark Davison in Paris. Previous to that, I had been working with CAD and databases (or spread sheets), but I had noticed either version 1 or 2 of Visio on a computer mag cover disk, and earmarked it for future investigation.
We have recently been made aware that Ted Johnson, one of the original founders, has a website with the history of Visio up to the acquisition by Microsoft in 1999 ( see http://www.visiocorp.info ). It is fascinating reading, and there are lots of faces that I met there, plus some that you should still be aware of ( eg Chris Roth, aka VisGuy http://www.visguy.com/ ).
Visio is a unique product, and the story of Visio shows that it is a well-loved one, with an enthusiastic team behind it, and an watchful community eager to see it further develop!
So, I have now published the Visio 2010 MVP Sessions as a Windows Phone 8.1 app too ( see http://blog.bvisual.net/2014/06/27/the-visio-2010-mvp-sessions-windows-app/ ). This is the second part of my second Universal App.
I had some issues with orientation, and that YouTube videos have to be played via a browser, and not in a XAML media element, however I think that the app provides a handy way to view the 24 videos that Scott , Chris and I made for Microsoft.
The app is available for free from the Windows Phone store ( http://bit.ly/1kdSDwx )… if you have upgraded to the 8.1 OS version.
When the Microsoft marketing machine moved its sights onto the 2013 of Visio, they decided to upload the 24 videos that I, Scott Helmers and Chris Roth did for Visio 2010 to YouTube. YouTube is great, but it is so large that I get lost looking for stuff that I am interested in, so I have created a handy little Windows 8.1 app to bring all of the videos together.
The content is still very relevant for Microsoft Visio 2013, and we cover a wide area of Visio’s capabilities in these short introductory videos. Each one is between 5 and 7 minutes…ish.
