Microsoft blogged the launch of Visio for iPad and Visio Online Preview yesterday ( see blogs.office.com ). This should be welcome news to every Visio user who wants to increase the consumption of their carefully crafted diagrams. These two new ways of viewing Visio documents (for free) have different capabilities, so I have put some slides together that describe the current differences. Coincidently, Microsoft also announced the upcoming Windows 10 on ARM processors ( see Windows Central ), so the ability to create Visio diagrams is going to be possible on mobile devices too!
I have shown the Windows Microsoft Visio Viewer in the above images because it is installed by Microsoft Office, and is employed to preview Visio diagrams in Outlook. It also has an Api and can be extended, as in my own visViewer application ( see Update to visViewer for reload and Visio document links). I personally hope that the Visio Online Preview and Visio for iPad (and future iPhone version!), have all of the capabilities of the Windows Visio Viewer at least.
I have omitted Visio Services which currently provides a SharePoint webpart for viewing Visio diagrams, as the Visio Online Preview is now available to all SharePoint users with the relevant licences.
I encourage everybody to try these new applications! The Visio future is looking exciting!
